Patients, when ill, present not only a collection of organ systems, one or more of which require the intervention of scientific medicine, but rather as integral humans beings with narratives, preferences, values, psychology and many social necessities. Scientific medicine can only address a fraction of such concerns, so we need to improve and implement health systems science as an emerging component of professional education. Person centered healthcare is a new way of “thinking and doing” in clinical practice which understands patients as persons. This is a philosophy and method which enables affordable biomedical and technological advance to be delivered to patients within a humanistic framework of care that recognizes the importance of treating the patient as a whole person and responding to “her emotional, social and spiritual necessities in addition to her physical needs”.
The meeting of October 2019 brings together a range of distinguished speakers from different countries and over the intensive two days we will have presentations, posters and oral communications spanning a wide range of areas with relevance to the implementation and development of the person centered approach.
The Associação Para A Segurança dos Doentes (APASD) and their distinguished partners, European Society for Person Centered Healthcare and Portuguese Medical Association, welcome you to the conference.
